Group exhibition Progress
Our group's transition from our first concept of the dementia of femininity to focusing on women in games was definitely something that we had to work through given that we had to scrap our original ideas and power through to catch up progress wise with the rest of the class. However, it was a concept that i was also quite interested in working with and seemed more cohesive as a theme as compared to our previous one that was quite disjointed and separated.
As such, we settled on first deciding the games that we were to focus on. We decided to not only focus on the role of women in gaming in terms of women developers but on the narratives of women characters and women based in storylines in games as well in order to create a more comprehensive scope for the exhibition. Through our researching about women in gaming and the current landscape, i found quite a few interesting things that i had only briefly delved into but never explored further.
GamerGate
Of course, this is a topic that cannot be glossed over given its intensity and shaping of the landscape of women in gaming. It was of course a host of toxicity, but in my opinion, it was useful in bringing to light many problems with the gaming industry and gamers as a whole. Given that it was such a flamewar, there are obviously many nuances that I may have missed out on, but as a whole gamer gate certainly brings to the table a number of issues ranging from feminism, SJWs, 4chan, death threats, misogyny, censorship, misrepresentation, journalistic integrity and many more that we will have to take into consideration as well.
Changethegame
What came up when i was researching was Google's recent 'Changethegame' movement that focuses on women in specifically mobile gaming. Thus, to promote diversity in gaming, they spotlight and celebrate female developers and players in order to empower them. The little informative game featured on their site is also very interesting and cute and it really informed me more on the current landscape of games and opened my eyes to being quite excited about our new exhibition concept!
